PKM Update 2-21-14

Great performance everyone!  PKM dancers once again wow'ed the Garfield audience.  Under Kasia's direction, PKM provided the singing and dancing talent for the event.  As usual, the hosts treated everyone to a full dinner and much hospitality.  Thanks, everyone:)   See photos.

To build on this momentum, we will have dance practice this Friday.  Since the Kolomejka was re-introduced into the PKM repretoire last week, we want to solidify that dance, by practicing it and teaching it to rest of the group.  Plus, we will review some of the other suites as well.

I am sure that you have heard about the tragedies in Ukraine. Poland's leaders have spoken out against President Viktor Yanukovychin and in support of the anti-government activists in Kiev.  Here in Philadelphia, a public demonstration is being organized this Sunday to express solidarity with the Ukrainian community.  Please find the details below.

EVENT: Ukrainians and supporters in the Philadelphia area will hold a rally to protest the killings of at least 30 protesters in Kyiv on Tuesday, as well as attacks on several hundred who are seriously injured. Please bring candles to mourn the dead.

DATE and TIME: Sunday, February 23 at 2 pm
LOCATION: Thomas Paine Plaza (across from City Hall)
1401 John F Kennedy Blvd.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19102

PKM was asked to perform at Polish Heritage Day at a NE Philly nursing Home on Saturday, April 19.  I added it to the Calendar below.  I will be happy to manaqethis performance:)

I have heard from a number of you regarding the preference for Dennis Klima's visit for April 11.  If you have not done so already, please let me know if this date is OK for you.

PKM Update 1-21-13

Happy New Year and Szczesliwego Nowego Roku!  Hope your 2013 is going well:)
Congratuations to our Dave Zagorski and his Fralinger String Band on placing first on January 1st!  Their portrayal of "Back from the Dead", with the support of their team, really shined that day!
I am attaching the Q4 PFDAA Newsletter.  It includes updated information regarding the 2013 Festival.
Starting January 25, PKM will hold Recruiting Nights on last Friday of each month.  We will skip March, as that would be Good Friday, but will resume in April.  So please invite your friends, family members or interested parties on those nights, knowing that the evening will be well suited for new / interested dancers.
Polish Police Ball will take place on Saturday, February 9.  Andrew / John will be getting tickets, coordinating tables.  If you would like to sit in the "PKM circle", please bring your money by Friday, January 25 to rehearsal.  Should be a fun evening:)
Please note the following upcoming performances;
- January 26, in Garfield NJ
- January 30 at University of Pennsylvania - see attached flyer
Just for fun, I am attaching an picture a friend from Poland sent me, demonstrating how Poland manages to seamlessly blend current technology with age old traditions.
Please remember the new policy for attending dance practices - if you cannot make it, let Misia / Andrew know by end of day Wednesday (Jan 16).

PKM Update 9-24-2012

A lot has changed since the last email. I have moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, and the dance group is entering a very busy performance season. As the Calendar below suggests, there is a lot of dancing to be done in the next few weeks! Everyone had a a nice, long break and now its time to dust off those dance shoes and get in dancing shape again:)

Like this past weekend, PKM was well-represented at St. John Cantius Polish School's 20th Anniversary Banquet. We all danced the night away! In attendance were Debbie Majka, Krzys Mozdzonek, Paula Kwasniewska, Andrzej Wisniewski, Liz Stasnek, Basia Goral, Ola and Jan Goral (they're dancing again!), David Zagorski, Tina Saraczewska, and legacy dancer Andrzej Mieckowski :)

This Sunday, September 30, PKM will perform a the Vineland Flag Raising ceremony. The show will be short, and food they feed the participants delicious. We need to decide what numbers are to be performed and agree on logistics. Please arrive at practice on time so there is time to prepare.

After all the performances we have scheduled this and next month, we can go to see Slask, the National Song and Dance Ensamble of Poland, and compare how we measure up. I am sure by then PKM's level will be very close to Slask's? Lets talk on Friday about getting tickets so we can all sit together. I for one, cannot wait to see the show! See attached flyer.

Also attached is thePFDAA Quarterly Newsletter, letting you know what our umbrella organization is up to.

The Halloween Party at Polish Home is Saturday, October 27 from 8:30 to 1:30. Costumes are encouraged, DJ Narodowski will play. Tickets are $25, include appetizers, dinner and dessert. Cash bar with $2 Sobieski shots. I'll see if I can get the flyer from Andrzej so it can be attached to tomorrow's email.

As many of you know, Debbie is the Grand Marshall this year for the Pulaski Day Parade. I would like to invite everyone to attend the Parade Banquet the night before as one of our PKM events to honor Debbie. Tickets are $60, sit-down dinner and open bar, and good music. It is one of the major fundraisers for the parade, so I think we should all attend. Let Andrew know who wants tickets, and we will submit our payments all at once.

Please check the Calender tab to stay updated on events!
I hope to see EVERYONE at practice this Thursday and Friday.

PKM Update 8-18-12

PKM did a one hour show at the Baltimore Polish Festival.  This year the event took place indoors, at the State Fairgrounds.  The dancers wow'ed the audience with their spectacular dancing and Glee soothed their ears with the sweet melodies of Poland.  See photos.
As every summer, we are having a White Water Rafting trip again this year!  It will take place on Sunday, August 5 at the Poconos We will be joining an already formed group which brought the price down to $43.07:)  Let me know if you want to come and I will provide more details.
Since I am moving to Switzerland next month, I want to say farewell to all my PKM and Polish Home friends. I enjoyed working with many of you on renovation projects, taking trips, dancing, making costumes, hosting events, improving landscaping and so many other projects.  I thank you for those times,I will remember them fondly.  Please come to Polish Home nextThursday, August 9, at 6PM to say goodbye, and enjoy some BBQ delicacies (sponsored by PKM), beverages (sponsored by Polish Home) and good music.  Salads and deserts are welcome, as are skits, roasts, songs and general good times:)  Please come if only for a little while as I would like to see everyone before I leave.

PKM Update 2-24-2012

Last week the dancers got a break so I am sure eveyone is ready for tomorrrow's Teaching Session! Since there was so much excitement about Annie's Zumba style warm-ups, we will try to put something together in that format:)

The evening with begin with Glee at 7:30. Krzysiu and Misia will be working those great voices of yours:)

Tomorrow's dance practice will be dedicated to refining Lowicz. Why Lowicz you ask? Because PKM will be performing it at Temple University's Celebration of Globalization performance. We sent in a tape of Lowicz and were accepted as a competitor for the event. The motivation to shine is especially strong as the winner of this competition (yes, it's a COMPETITION) receives $1000 prize:) I think it is definetly within our reach. But of course, we need to earn it. The event is in April but the organizers requested a dress rehearsal in March. More details at practice.

A number of PKM'ers will be trekking to NYC on Saturday to take part in the Zofia Czechlewska workshop. There is still space left in a the car so if you would like to go, let me know on Friday. The cost is $40 but PKM is covering $20 of that. Should be fun!

On Friday we will also talk about the July 21 performance in Baltimore. Some plans are already in place but others need to be discussed.

Attached you will find a sponsorship form for Misia's play that is coming up soon. Lets discuss on Friday how PKM will support this fabulous artist in our midst:)

Since there will be a Polish Home meeting on March 9, we will not have official dance practice that evening. Lets discuss if we want to use that evening for something else, like individual/small group lessons or Polish kareoke. This may be fun as that is the planned date for opening the newly rennovated Club Room downstairs....
Also taking place the weekend of March 9 is the Philadelphia Flower Show, where our Ania and Krysia are competing. Lets talk about making a group trip downtown that weekend to support them in their attempt to win two years in a row!

PKM Update 9-26-2011

We had a busy weekend last week. On Friday we prepared the Rzeszow suite, in parade format. Even the newer dancers were able to master it by the end of the evening. Great job everyone!

We also had some news of a personal nature. Grzesiu and Sylwia are expecting a baby! Congratulations to both of you and we look forward to meeting this new PKM'er:)

We also held annual nomination/elections for the year 2011-2012. The officers remain the same:) Also, please continue to send in your PKM dues.

On Sunday we had our first show in Vineland, NJ. See attached article and photots.

Later that afternoon, we celebrated Adam Zazula's wedding in Hainesport. NJ. It was a beautiful party, the bride looked radiant and the dinner delicious. see photo.

This Friday we will follow the following format:

7:30 PKM Glee

8:30 Warm ups and dance elements with Ania

9:30 Parade prep - Rzeszow

Please let me know tomorrow if you would like to dance in the parade. Next week's practice will be light since we will be doing it off site @ Temple, so tmorrow evening is crucial.

Friday, September 9, 2011

Now that the Czestochowa Show is behind us, I want to thank so many people for their time, energies and patience during the challenge that was the two weeks of preparations:)  I want to thank the dancers for coming to extra practices to review / learn all the suites, the PKM Singing Ensamble for proving beautiful music so the dancers could change costumes and catch their breaths, Ela the Costume Czar for making us look beautiful, Stephen for introducing our numbers so the audience could follow the program, Andrzej Klimek for having our music ready on que and at the correct volume, Kasia's mom for taping the show and Pani Stasia for making two new Mazur costumes.  Job well done!   See photos.

This Friday, we have the following agenda:
8:30, please return all costumes from the Czestochowa show, or else, face Ela...
9Pm, enjoy the Thank You Party that PKM is treating everyone to.  Ice cream and all kinds of toppings will be provided:)
9:30  - discuss what can be improved in our one-hour program
          - decide on Little servant Sisters performance this Sunday
          - decline Oct 15 performance?
          - dance practice:)

We have been very fortunate to receive a donation of gently used girls Krakowiak pieces.  Since we encourage all members to have their own set, we will be selling pieces at very reasonable prices.  We also have a few new pieces from Poland.  Bring $$$

The Brach family has generously donated a Nowy Sacz belt!  Since we currently have 5 costumes and only 4 belts, this is truely a lucky situation for us.  Jacek and Mary, the next time we perform Nowy Sacz, it will be in your honor:)  Dzieki.
