Since there was so much excitement about Annie's Zumba style warm-ups, we will try to put something together in that format:)

The evening with begin with Glee at 7:30. Krzysiu and Misia will be working those great voices of yours:)

Tomorrow's dance practice will be dedicated to refining Lowicz. Why Lowicz you ask? Because PKM will be performing it at Temple University's Celebration of Globalization performance. We sent in a tape of Lowicz and were accepted as a competitor for the event. The motivation to shine is especially strong as the winner of this competition (yes, it's a COMPETITION) receives $1000 prize:) I think it is definetly within our reach. But of course, we need to earn it. The event is in April but the organizers requested a dress rehearsal in March. More details at practice.

A number of PKM'ers will be trekking to NYC on Saturday to take part in the Zofia Czechlewska workshop. There is still space left in a the car so if you would like to go, let me know on Friday. The cost is $40 but PKM is covering $20 of that. Should be fun!

On Friday we will also talk about the July 21 performance in Baltimore. Some plans are already in place but others need to be discussed.

Attached you will find a sponsorship form for Misia's play that is coming up soon. Lets discuss on Friday how PKM will support this fabulous artist in our midst:)

Since there will be a Polish Home meeting on March 9, we will not have official dance practice that evening. Lets discuss if we want to use that evening for something else, like individual/small group lessons or Polish kareoke. This may be fun as that is the planned date for opening the newly rennovated Club Room downstairs....
Also taking place the weekend of March 9 is the Philadelphia Flower Show, where our Ania and Krysia are competing. Lets talk about making a group trip downtown that weekend to support them in their attempt to win two years in a row!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409775126931468194.post-82093674845713918492011-09-27T05:49:00.001-07:002017-10-18T10:32:37.144-07:00PKM Update 9-26-2011Hello,

We had a busy weekend last week. On Friday we prepared the Rzeszow suite, in parade format. Even the newer dancers were able to master it by the end of the evening. Great job everyone!

We also had some news of a personal nature. Grzesiu and Sylwia are expecting a baby! Congratulations to both of you and we look forward to meeting this new PKM'er:)

We also held annual nomination/elections for the year 2011-2012. The officers remain the same:) Also, please continue to send in your PKM dues.

On Sunday we had our first show in Vineland, NJ. See attached article and photots. http://www.thedailyjournal.com/article/20110919/NEWS01/109190311/Polish-culture-embraced-V-land

Later that afternoon, we celebrated Adam Zazula's wedding in Hainesport. NJ. It was a beautiful party, the bride looked radiant and the dinner delicious. see photo.

This Friday we will follow the following format:

7:30 PKM Glee

8:30 Warm ups and dance elements with Ania

9:30 Parade prep - Rzeszow

Kochani,

Now that the Czestochowa Show is behind us, I want to thank so many people for their time, energies and patience during the challenge that was the two weeks of preparations:) I want to thank the dancers for coming to extra practices to review / learn all the suites, the PKM Singing Ensamble for proving beautiful music so the dancers could change costumes and catch their breaths, Ela the Costume Czar for making us look beautiful, Stephen for introducing our numbers so the audience could follow the program, Andrzej Klimek for having our music ready on que and at the correct volume, Kasia's mom for taping the show and Pani Stasia for making two new Mazur costumes. Job well done! See photos.

This Friday, we have the following agenda:
8:30, please return all costumes from the Czestochowa show, or else, face Ela...
9Pm, enjoy the Thank You Party that PKM is treating everyone to. Ice cream and all kinds of toppings will be provided:)
9:30 - discuss what can be improved in our one-hour program
- decide on Little servant Sisters performance this Sunday
- decline Oct 15 performance?
- dance practice:)

Costumes:
We have been very fortunate to receive a donation of gently used girls Krakowiak pieces. Since we encourage all members to have their own set, we will be selling pieces at very reasonable prices. We also have a few new pieces from Poland. Bring $$$

The Brach family has generously donated a Nowy Sacz belt! Since we currently have 5 costumes and only 4 belts, this is truely a lucky situation for us. Jacek and Mary, the next time we perform Nowy Sacz, it will be in your honor:) Dzieki.

On Friday we held our dance practice, and welcomed new members, Kathryn and Veronica. We hope you have fun dancing and spending time with PKM:)

On Saturday we hosted members of the PAFDC group from New York. First we took them to the mecca of Philly cheesesteaks, Pat's in South Philly. They seemed to really enjoy that menu offering. Afterwards, we exposed them to some of the cultural wonders of Philly located along the Ben Franklin Parkway, with a final stop at the Art Museum.

At 7PM we gathered with the rest of PKM for a joint dance practice at St. Adalberts gym for a energetic, and fun filled evening. Together, we danced their suites and tought them our Wielkopolska. See photo. The evening ended with a performance at a wedding in Bensalem. Thanks to all that shared the evening with us.

Sunday was the most challenging yet most fun day of the weekend. Of course I am referring to the Noc Swietojanska Picnic at Polish Home. The mastermind of the event, Andrew Wisniewski, did most of the preparations for the event; installing outdoor lights in the BBQ area, clearing out and "rennovating" the summer bar, getting the menu ready and preparing the program. The day of the picnic, it was a team effort that made the event a success. Members of Polish Home's Board of Directors swiftly set up and ran the bar, Pawel, Krzysiu and Edek ran the grill , putting the finishing touches on their tasty bigos (prepared by Ania and Sylwia) that morning. Debbie, Dorothy, Ela and Wojtek manned the admissions and deserts tables, while our PAFDC guests set up all the decorations, got the outdoor tables covered and generally "helped out". The entertainment part of the Program was well received. It included performances by PKM, PAFDC and the Chorus. The traditional "wianki" were laid on the "stream" and young and old alike had fun looking for the "forbidden fern". The children mostly enjoyed the "babka" throwing contest, as the hurled water balloons down the driveway. And Pani Kolodziej read palms and generally entertained the guests as our resident "wrozka".

Thanks to all those mentioned and the ones omitted as I know everyone did all they could to support the cause which is to make sure our Polish Home stays a vibrant part of our Polish community. See photo.

Next weekend we have a busy schedule as well. We will begin the evening with a performance in center city Philly. Afterwards we will gather for dance practice as there is much to prepare for the Czestochowa show.

On Saturday, July 9, we will travel to the Poconos for some white water rafting. More details on that event in my next week's email.

PKM Calendar
July 1 No dance practice
July 8 Performance (wedding, center city Philly)
Dance practice after performance - @9PM
July 9 White Water Rafting in the Poconos
July 10 Independence Day Picnic @ Polish Home
July 21 Rzeszow Festival, POLAND
Aug 12 Dance practice
Aug 19 No dance practice
Aug 26 Dance practice
Sept 2 Dance practice
Sept 4 Performance @ Polish Festival, Czsetochowa
Sept 10 Performance @ Little servant Sisters
Sept 18 AM - Performance @ Vineland NJ
PM - Wedding in Hainedport, NJ
Oct 2 Pulaski Day Parade
Jan 28 Royal Maor, Polish University Club Ball (2012)

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening,
Diane
www.pkmdancers.comUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409775126931468194.post-9237307029084106392011-06-23T20:16:00.000-07:002017-10-18T10:32:37.166-07:00PKM Update 6-24-2011Halo,

On Saturday, at the St. Peter's Cathedral, a mass to celebrate 200 year anniversary of of the birth of St. John Newmann was served. Our own Ania, Krzysiu, Paula and Kuba, dressed in Krakowiak, represented the Polish community. Thanks for committing your time and energy to this cause. See photo.

Last Sunday myself and Andrew Wisniewski performed with the PAFDC group in NYC in their Rzeszow Preview Concert. It was a lot of fun. The program included 6 suites performed by the adult group, 2 numbers by the children's group and 3 kapela segments. The hall was filled with a cheering audience, making it easy to dance our best. While we danced, Eric and Monica were helping out with the operations; adding more chairs, running the sound system, manning the selling table. See photo as well as article in local paper GreenpointBlog

We returned on Monday to perform in our own Port Richmond's Campbell Sqare that evening. Although the program was short, the local audience seemed to really enjoy it, especially the young children, as over 30 of them joined us for the Polonez. See photos.

Yes, the White Water Rafting Trip is on for Saturday, July 9. Its a day trip, so no need to bring sleeping bags and such. The cost is $66 for a 5 hour ride down the river. Please bring your $$ tomorrow if you want to register with the group.

Tomorrow's practice will be focused on getting ready for the Noc Swietojanska Picnic which will take place this Sunday. Please bring all your costumes back so we can keep the Costume Closet current.

On Saturday we will also hold practice, this time with our guests from NYC, the PAFDC group. They are very excited to join us and we have a busy weekend planned with them. At 4PM we will take them into Philly for an informal tour. All PKM'ers are welcome to join us. We will visit some of the local cultural/historic spots, with a mandatory stop at Geno's / Pats for some Philly Chees Steaks, of course! We will begin the joint dance practice at St. Adalberts gymnasium at 7PM. After we finish, some of us (those signed up on Friday) will perform at a wedding in NE Philly. Others will head on over to Polish Home for some Polish Kareoke.

PKM Calendar
June 24 Dance practice
June 25 Joint practice with PAFDC @ 7PM
Performance @ wedding @ 10:30
June 26 Noc Swietojanska Picninc @ Polish Home
July 8 Performance (wedding, center city Philly)
Dance practice after performance - @9PM
July 9 White Water Rafting in the Poconos
July 10 Independence Day Picnic @ Polish Home
July 21 Rzeszow Festival, POLAND
Aug 12 Dance practice
Aug 19 No dance practice
Aug 26 Dance practice
Sept 2 Dance practice
Sept 4 Performance @ Polish Festival, Czsetochowa
Sept 10 Performance @ Little servant Sisters
Sept 18 AM - Performance @ Vineland NJ
PM - Wedding in Hainedport, NJ
Oct 2 Pulaski Day Parade
Jan 28 Royal Maor, Polish University Club Ball (2012)

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening,
DianeUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409775126931468194.post-29879924538832927292011-03-27T07:42:00.000-07:002017-10-18T10:32:37.049-07:00PKM Update March 25 2011Kochani, This practice will be dedicated to developing a Standard PKM One-hour Program. I have put together a proposal and we will discuss at 8:30. Please bring your ideas and lets come up with a plan that showcases our suites and costumes and and makes it easy to put on a show:) At 9PM we will start dancing. The PKM Glee practice will begin at 7:30. We are still accepting donations for the Orphanage in Poland. The first package will be sent out next week, but since there are many donations, we will send out one package a week for the next few weeks. List attached. On Sunday, before the Pan Wolodyjowski film was shown, PKM held Opening Ceremonies for the Polish Home Volleyball Court! See photos. Besides cutting the red ribbon, we went on to play for two hours in the perfect weather, enjoying this new facility and each other's company. As soon as the weather gets better, we will hold regular volleyball practices before dance practice. Also, some are talking about organizing a tournament with other Polish organizations. Debbie, let your ladies in the choir know they have been challenged:) Our Costume Avengers are working very hard at organizing our costumes. If you have not done so already, please bring all PKM costumes from your home so they can inventory it and tag it approprietly. Thanks! In this time of lent, some of you may wish to attend a traditional Polish Gorzkie Zale at the St. Adalbert's church. The ceremony starts at 7PM and every week another your organization hosts the event. Check it out.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409775126931468194.post-45103552833293437292011-02-21T06:56:00.000-08:002017-10-18T10:32:37.070-07:00PKM Update 2-20-11
Witam,

The Polka Lessons for Everyone last Friday night was a great success! Many people attended, regular members as well as alumni and their offsprings:) It was so nice to be part of the multi generational gathering; the alumni sharing their love of Polish dancing (and PKM) with their children. I invite all the alumni to bring their young ones to join us for the Oberek Lessons for Everyone session, which will be scheduled in the spring (thanks for the idea, Jay!) No one is too young to learn the Oberek....

The Polka lessons paid off, as was evident at the Polish Police Ball on Saturday. PKM had record number of tables, 5 to be exact! It seems everyone enjoyed the combination of great food, fabulous music and good company that evening. Of course no Police Ball is complete without our traditional photo session. See attached. More coming next week:)

The Wielkopolska Suite practice was rescheduled for March 11. Please mark it in your calendars as it promises to be a good one. Dennis has been calling me with many ideas for improving the suite. Although it will be slightly shortened, it will be enhanced to include other elements of presentation. We shall call it Wielkopolska 2.0

We will hold the first PKM Meeting of the year on Friday, February 25. Please forward any agenda items to be by next Thursday, Feb 24.

As a reminder, I am attaching the flyer for the upcoming Polish Movie Classic, POTOP, that will be shown at Polish Home on Saturday, February 26 at 4PM. He would not disclose the exact number but we are pretty certain it was slightly higher than 21:) Sto Lat Stephen!

I am attaching the revised flyer for the Movie Night series, Ogniem i Mieczem. I was corrected as to who directed the movie. And it was not Andrzej Wajda, but Jerzy Hoffman. My bad:(

This Friday there is no dance practice, as PKM will go to the Poconos! Those that signed up, please contact me with your menu contributions. Paula has kindly arranged for us to get the Harcerze discount for skiing ($39 per person!) and I will bring copies of the release forms for all to sign.

Dance practice will resume next Friday, January 28. As usual, we will begin with Glee at 7:30 and then proceed to Dance Practice at 8:30. We have some administrative issues to address as well as start preparing for February 4, when Dennis Klima will visit us to revive the Wielkopolska Suite! Very exciting! That Saturday, January 29, we have a performance so we will prepare for that as well.

Since Dennis will be here February 4, we will reduce the the Figure Dances Workshop with Jay and Annie to just February 11. I think that may be just enough for us.

Following up on the decisions made in the Nov 2010 meeting, roles of the Dance Group Committee members have been defined;

Richard Klimek - Strategic Advisor He will advise as to where the group should head in terms of which dances to bring back, revise, focus on.

Stephen Szymanik - Costume Overlord In this role Stephen will get an accurate inventory of our costumes and develop a system for distributing them and keeping them in good shape. Although critical to PKM, costumes can be addressed on a more flexible schedule which will allow Stephen to be totally available for for his kids.

Diane Misthal - Operations I will run Friday night practices and address logistics of performances. We believe this approach will allow PKM to get the best resouces available to work for its benefit and look forward to another great year!
PKM Calendar
Jan 21 PKM Ski weekend
Jan 28 Dance practice / Meeting
Jan 29 Polish University Club of NJ Scholarship Ball, Garfiled, NJ
Feb 4 Dance practice / Wielkopolska Suite with Dennis Klima
Feb 11 Dance practice / Polka lessons 8:30 - 9:30 with Jay and Annie Poko!
Feb 12 Polish Police Ball
Feb 18 Dance practice
Feb 25 Dance practice
Feb 26 Movie Night @ Polish Home, POTOP, basen on novel by Sienkiewicz
March 4 Dance practice
May 7 Follies Party @ Polish Home Looking forward to seeing everyone next Firday evening,

DianeUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409775126931468194.post-65615994868995675232011-01-06T15:07:00.000-08:002017-10-18T10:32:37.107-07:00PKM Update 1-06-2011Kochani!

Welcome to 2011! I am sure all of you celebrated the New Year with much fanfare and merriment! Some of us gathered at Rich's work to view the fireworks that display magnificently from that venue - see photo.

The next day a number of PKM'ers actively participated in the unique tradition that is the Mummers Parade. After the show, we were lucky enough to catch us with some of the participants - see photo. Congrats to both Polish American and Fralinger, for placing in the top spots this year, again!

Although the Mummers Parade took place last week, its not too late to vote for the Viewers Choice Award for one of the string bands. I know I do not need to remind you that last year Polish American String Band won that honor:) Below is the link that lets you submit your vote:
www.myphl17.com/vote or log on to myphl17.com and click on the "Mummers" section or the "Contests" link. Vote until January 9.

This Friday we will begin holding our weekly dance practices. We have many plans to enhance our program and want to get started with the work. Dance practice will begin at 8:30.

Also this Friday the PKM Glee Club will also start holding sessions. Those interested in joining, please arrive at 7:30.

As every year, many of us plan to attend the Polish Police Ball on February 12. It was requested that we spend some time working on our Polka technique and review some of the figure dances in preparation. I have alloted an hour for just that on the two Fridays preceeding the Ball. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity:)

Although we are just starting our Winter season, we have already been asked to do a performance. It is on January 29, Saturday, at 8PM. The event is the Polish University Club of NJ Scholarship Ball. It should be fun as the hosts have indicated we will be treated to a mean and cocktails! Please mark your calendars appropriately.

Just as a reminder, here is the link to the web page with information about the Rzeszow Festival this summer.
http://www.wspolnota-polska.rzeszow.pl/pl/swiatowy-festiwal-polonijny/zalozenia-programowo-organizacyjne/51/

This Saturday we are scheduled to hold PKM on ICE - go ice skating at the U of Penn Class of 1923. It was the culmination of a summer's worth of dance practices for many of us. We enhanced existing suites as well as debuted a new one, Stara Warszawa. Much praise is to be showered on our Artistic Director, Stephano, without whose tireless efforts our performance would not "shine". But also every person who was there on Sunday, contributed to our success. Many thanks to each of you. See photos. After the show, we stayed at the festival and enjoyed the foods, music and catching up with many PKM alumni that were in attendance.

Another aspect of the Czestochowa performance that added to the celebration was the introduction of the newest PKM t-shirts! If you have not seen them yet, I must warn you, they are way cool. We have limited quantities available so get yours soon! They cost $10 per shirt. See last photo.

This Friday's practice will be held in two parts. At 7:30PM we will collect costumes and watch the video from the Czestochowa performance. Many thanks in advance to Stephen and Dorothy Skorczynski for taping the show, MC'ing the performance and putting the show on DVD for us. We will start the preparations for this Sunday's performance at 9:30PM.

This Sunday PKM will perform at Little Servant Sisters' annual Country Fair. Although not as big as Czestochowa, its quite a bit of fun and we always have a good time there. Another tradition for that day is the BBQ at the Klimek residence right after the show. To facilitate the planning phase of the BBQ, I will circulate a menu sign up sheet on Friday so think ahead about what you would like to bring and lets talk on Friday:)

Now that September is upon us, its time for the 2010 Innauguration of this year's PKM Officers. On September 24 we will officially thank the previous administration and challenge the new one to lead PKM in improvements while keeping true to its heritage. A small reception will follow. The event will also serve as the official openning of the PKM Lounge in Polish Home.

Looking at the Calendar I want to point out two activities that were added. Both will be held at Polish Home. More details on both events coming up soon. Be sure to add them to your calendar as we need YOUR support to make these Polish Home activities a success!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409775126931468194.post-73608546777295740462010-08-12T17:44:00.000-07:002017-10-18T10:32:37.129-07:00

Kochani,

It has been over a month since the last official PKM email, but now I am back from Poland and you will be hearing from us more regularly:)

Firstly, thanks to all that participated in our summer performances, namely the wedding on July 10, birthday party on July 17 and a parish Polish Festival in White Marsh on Aug 2. I understand all performances went very well thanks to the efforts of the dancers as well as our Summer Performance Coordinator, Ela Kij-Antoniak.

Now we focus on getting ready for the Czestochowa performance which is coming up on Sunday, September 5. Our members arrived on time and worked tirelessly as we brought ALL of the costumes down from the second floor closet to the main hall. We designated a table for each region and a person was assigned to assess the situation for that set of costumes. Not an easy task. But it did allow us to take full inventory of the costumes so we can now determine what is missing and start addressing that issue. The good news is that we now know what we have. The bad news is that we know what kind of effort is needed to complete some of the sets. Thanks to all that helped out. PKM celebrated our annual Wigilia at Polish Home on Friday, December 18. As planned, everyone brought delicious food. Our menu was enhanced by Dorothy Skorczynski's crabcakes and chocolate fountain and Grzesiu and Sylvia's krokiety. Our dessert menu included cakes brought by Rich and Liz and Ania. Everyone ate till they were full. Then we all gathered by the karaoke machine and sang Polish and American koledy.
